You are not the party of law and order Lib Dems tell Priti Patel

9 Dec 2019

The Government's approach to policing is increased crime, increased vulnerability and an increasing fear of crime. They are not the party of law and order.

Tory Brexit plans would make us less safe and their manifesto seeks to undermine the rule of law.

Priti Patel has claimed that the Conservatives are "the Party of Law and Order" however they simply cannot claim to be the party of law and order.

  • Brexit would rob our police of the European Arrest Warrant that has brought thousands of criminals to justice, as well as access to EU-wide crime databases that they use more than a million times a day. Brexit would mean more criminals on our streets.

  • Boris Johnson broke the law when he lied to the Queen and shut down Parliament, and now he wants to weaken our courts so he can break the law with impunity.

  • Closed local police stations, and magistrates courts, under-resourced prisons to the point of chaos and now trumpets the recruitment of police to replace those that have been cut.

  • The result of the Government's approach to policing is increased crime, increased vulnerability and an increasing fear of crime. There has been a parallel impact on the police family with officers and staff feeling undervalued, frustrated that they cannot deliver an effective service and feeling vulnerable themselves.

Liberal Democrats believe that the foundations of an effective service are based in community policing, sensitive to diverse nature of our communities.

  • The Liberal Democrats recognises the need to have an effective response to national and international organised crime. Part of the response includes the formation of a national agency to fight these crime.

  • The Lib Dem policy explicitly recognises the need to treat youth violence as a public health issue which requires significant investment to rebuild of key community services.

  • Liberal Democrats acknowledge that the police, often first on the scene, are not the best qualified people to care for people suffering from mental illness and professional agencies must be better resourced to provide this help and support.

  • The Lib Dems Lib Dem Crime and Policing Policy - United Against Crime - is a blueprint for rebuilding the Police Service so that it can deliver its part in the mission to promote communities that are safe and feel safe.

25 YEARS OF IGNORING THE CAUSES OF CRIME
For 25 years, both the Conservative and Labour Governments have been competing to seem tough on crime, without doing enough to actually prevent it.

Only the Liberal Democrats can take seats from the Conservatives at this election and stop Boris getting a majority.

Every vote for the Liberal Democrats is a vote to stop Boris, stop Brexit and keep our country safe from the Tories.
