Looking for facts and figures about the European Union? Eurostat is the place to start, at http://ec.europa.eu/eurostat/web/main/home.

The scope of statistics available is wide-ranging. From recent articles posted there, we learn that:

  • In the EU in 2013, over a million people died from a heart attack or stroke, accounting for more than a fifth of all deaths. In the UK in that year, 12.7% of deaths were attributable to heart attacks, and 7% to strokes.
  • In 2015, 88,300 unaccompanied minors sought international protection in EU countries, with around half of them coming from Afghanistan. Three quarters of these asylum seekers registered their applications in Sweden, Germany, Hungary or Austria (the countries with the highest numbers of unaccompanied minors among asylum applicants). Sweden had the highest proportion of all, accounting for 40% of the total.
  • In 2015, the EU Intellectual Property Office received 89,420 applications for trade mark protection. Almost 70% of these applications were made from member states of the EU but 16,881 came from the US, 4,153 from China, 3,997 from Switzerland, 2,593 from Japan, and 2,038 from South Korea.
  • The "Europe 2020" strategy is for at least 40% of 30-34-year-olds in the EU to have completed tertiary education (the UK's current level exceeds this, at 47.8% and 6th in the ranking), and for less than 10% of young people to leave school early (the UK has nearly, but not quite, reached this level, at 10.8% and 20th in the ranking). The UK is unique among EU member states in having no national target for the proportion of people aged between 30 and 34 who have completed tertiary education, and in having no national target for the proportion of people aged between 18 and 24 who have left education and training early.
