East Suffolk Liberal Democrats Launch their Election Campaign
On Thursday May 2nd voters have the chance to help form a new District Council following the merger between the Suffolk Coastal and Waveney Councils.
It is a chance to acheive a far better balanced Council with all 55 Councillors playing a full part in helping make the decisions in the best interests of their electors and all residents across the 29 massively enlarged electoral Wards.
The Liberal Democrats want to play their part in helping bring in a new consultative aproach to local government where residents are able to play a bigger role in not only the large developments but in helping to improve and sustain their local communities.
Larger wards will inevitably means less contact with the local Councillor following a similar pattern of reduced reporting and accountability to Parish Councils by the Suffolk Constabulary.
Regrettably, Suffolk Coastal Council has been run in recent times by a small group of Conservative councillors who operate a cabinet government.
Liberal Democrats believe in open and transparent government, reporting back to their residents whenever possible. Our communities belong to the residents not a select group of members often elected by a fraction of the electorate, where consultation on non planning matters means a brief period of notice on a website.
Liberal Democrats elected to the new Council will listen and consult with local residents about all major plans and developments and will hold regular surgeries for residents.
The Liberal Democrats will be contesting 30 of the 55 seats on Thursday and will have a candidate in 24 of the 29 Wards.

LD are in favour of more social housing which is affordable to rent, for shared ownership, Developers would be tasked the required number of affordable houses and continue to campaign to close the second homes tax loophole
LD will support and work alongside the 'third estate' the voluntary sector who are increasingly expected to provide services compromised by Tory cuts like citizens advice, foodbanks, youth and recreational facilitiies - all service facing increased local demand.
LD Councillors are committed to open and transparent government and they will listen and consult with local residents about all major plans and developments and all LD councillors will hold regular surgeries for residents.
LD will plan to ensure Green policies are developed covering all aspects of council activity and we will work to remove plastics form all our activities and restore the brown bins to all household who want them
LD will stand up for our town centres, market towns and small businesses. We will help and encourage the increased use and footfall by implementing an attractive parking charge policy, shared spaces and pedestrian schemes.
