Chuka joins the lib dems
Chuka Umunna, the Streatham MP has formally joined the Liberal Democrats after switching from the Labour Party to form a new political group. His decision is a most welcome one and the Party will be hoping that with a need to continue strengthening and uniting the anti Brexit forces to counter the worst that a new Brexit Government will do under a No Deal PM, Chuka's arrival will encourage other passionate internationalists with Liberal values to follow. The Liberal Democrats will not be too hard on Chukka for his past utterances about the Lib Dems in a Coalition Government as they were shared by some members and ex members and the Party has many current former members of the old parties who left to join the SDP. The current PPC for Streatham Helen Thompson has publicly welcomed Chuka's decision which is a good sign that there will be a positive response locally
With the Tories now banking on the 'mini Trump' to save them from political annihilation by the 'Faragos' and Labour MPs voting with the Tories for No Deal or happily sitting on their hands to save their own seats, the political tectonic plates are beginning to shift.
The disastrous local and EU election results for the two main parties have already provided an early warning of things to come. UK Change and the Independent benches have provided an acceptable halfway house for some but the realities of the electoral system have proven to be a hard lesson for anyone wishing to join a new 'start up' in the middle ground of politics.
In the past month, thousands of new members and supporters have been added to the ranks of Lib Dems. Many are new members but others are former members who have accepted that this is not the time to be harking back to past mistakes and errors that the Party has admitted to and apologised for. We have little time to save the UK from falling off a cliff and leaving the EU in October.
The Liberal Democrats are clearly the first choice in the centre ground of UK politics and the only Party to have campaigned from the beginning to Remain in the European Union. Chuka Umunna has taken a big step and joined us. If you are not yet a member or have friends and family members who share our Liberal values and are thinking of joining, the time to act is NOW.
