Reflecting on the budget's "indefensible" cuts to disability benefits

19 Mar 2016

On the morning after the night when Iain Duncan Smith resigned from his position in the Cabinet, citing ""indefensible" cuts to disability benefits as his reason for leaving, there is much discussion about Duncan Smith's real motivation in resigning over this particular policy at this particular point in time.

Whatever the truth of the situation, it is clear that there is a split in the Conservative party on the issue of social justice (an area of great significance in liberal democracy). It is worth reflecting on the Liberal Democrats' extensive achievements in moderating and liberalising Conservative policies during the coalition government between 2010 and 2015, and in pushing through many of the Lib Dems' own manifesto policies.

The political blogger Mark Pack produced the following infographic last year, to identify specific Lib Dem achievements in government, and you can read more about this on his website at http://www.markpack.org.uk/libdem-infographic/.
