Policy areas currently under consideration by the Liberal Democrats
One of the distinctive features of the Liberal Democrats is that the members get to vote on the party's policies, and also have an opportunity to be involved in working groups for developing those policies (if they are selected to take part, from amongst those volunteers who apply). So which policy areas are currently under consideration?
Due to be presented for debate at the Autumn Conference in September are:
- Social Security, with a policy paper called Mending the Safety Net, including proposals for tackling child poverty, reviewing assessment for work capability, and facilitating schemes to protect people from losing their home through unemployment
- Liberty and Security, with a policy paper called Safe and Free, incorporating areas such as the Prevent strategy, surveillance and control over personal data.
Currently at the stage of soliciting opinions, with policy consultation papers already produced for discussion at the Autumn Conference (comments invited by 28th October), and with future policy papers planned for debate at the Spring Conference 2017:
- Sex Work, for which the consultation paper can be found at the link here
- Nuclear Weapons, for which the consultation paper can be found at the link here.
New working groups have just been established in the areas of:
- 21st Century Economy, to be chaired by Julia Goldsworthy and Mike Tuffrey
- Education, to be chaired by Lucy Nethsingha
- Rural Communities, to be chaired by Heather Kidd.
And a new working group is being set up to look at Britain in the World (recruitment for which has now closed).
