Joe Biden and Kamala Harris’s victory may have saved US democracy.

Joe Biden and Kamala Harris's victory isn't just democratic, it may have saved US democracy.

In 70 days we will be looking forward to the inauguration of a new US President. In President-Elect Joe Biden and Vice President-Elect Kamela Harris we must hope for an end to chaos and a return to sanity in US governance and foreign policy and a return to international cooperation and renewed support for international humanitarian agencies and global agreements.

Environmentalists across the planet have held their hands in horror as a climate change denier walked away from an opportunity to help save the planet and humanitarians have been aghast as the US stepped away from it membership of the World Health Organisation (WHO) as a global pandemic swept the planet.

US election processes must run their course but the assault on the integrity of the US electoral administration can only serve to provide succour to authoritarian leaders and those who seek to undermine democracy. As Lib Dem Leader Ed Davey said in his message to the new President-Elect, the divisive form of politics over the past four years has tested the American democracy to the very limits. We must now trust that this election has indeed saved US democracy for the sake of all democracies across the world.

Sir Ed Davey MP

Ed Davey has sent his congratulations to the winners

"People around the world will now be breathing a huge sigh of relief. Over the past four years Donald Trump has fed a new divisive form of politics, testing American democracy to its very limits. Joe Biden and Kamala Harris's victory isn't just democratic, it may have saved US democracy.

"I'd like to congratulate Joe Biden and urge him not only to deliver on his promise to restore liberal values in the United States, but also to ensure the US will play a constructive role in the international battle to beat Coronavirus. The virus, like all of the world's biggest problems, can only be solved if we work together as an international community.

"I hope Joe Biden will be a President who fights alongside progressives for social justice and climate action at home and abroad."
