Interested in Liberal, SDP and Liberal Democrat history?

The Liberal Democrats have many special-interest groups, one of which is the Liberal Democrat History Group, which organises events and discussion meetings and publishes material of interest in this area. They produce a quarterly journal, the Journal of Liberal History, of which the current edition is the 96th issue. The Autumn 2017 issue contains (amongst other things) articles on:

  • "Old heroes for a new Leader": Vince Cable explains why Roy Jenkins is his political hero
  • "Liberal Democrat Leadership": Comparative table of leadership performance updated to 2017
  • "The 2017 election: a missed opportunity?": An examination of the Liberal Democrat performance in the 2017 election
  • "The Nonconformist mind of Lloyd George": The roots of Lloyd George's political beliefs
  • "En Marche! A new dawn for European liberalism?": An examination of the political background to Emmanuel Macron's election as French President
  • "The same but different: Lib Dem members in 1999 and 2015": An analysis of the characteristics of Liberal Democrat members

You can download back-issues of the journal at http://www.liberalhistory.org.uk/journal/ -- although older editions are available freely for download, the most recent ones are available only to subscribers. You can, however, purchase individual issues via the shop on their website, even if you are not a member.

As well as larger books, the Liberal Democrat History Group publishes a series of very accessible booklets (also available via the shop) giving useful overviews of topics such as:

  • Mothers of Liberty: Women who built British Liberalism
  • Liberal History: A concise history of the Liberal Party, SDP and Liberal Democrats
  • Liberalism: The ideas that built the Liberal Democrats
  • Liberal Thinkers
  • Liberal Leaders of the Twentieth Century
  • Liberal Leaders of the Nineteenth Century.

Membership of the Liberal Democrat History Group costs £25 per annum (£15 for the unwaged) for individuals in the UK, and includes a subscription to the Liberal History Journal and discounts on all the Group's publications.
