Thousands of endangered species and dozens of vulnerable natural habitats are protected from overdevelopment by the EU's nature laws, the strongest in the world. In the East of England, protected areas and habitats include the Alde, Ore and Butley Estuaries, Breckland, Dew`s Ponds, Fenland, Minsmere to Walberswick Heaths and Marshes, North Norfolk Coast, Ouse Washes, Overstrand Cliffs, River Wensum, Roydon Common and Dersingham Bog, Stour and Orwell Estuaries and The Broads.

Protected species include barn owls, otters, White-clawed crayfish, great crested newt, bats, dormice, water voles and red squirrels. EU laws ensure our shared wildlife including migratory birds enjoy protection across Europe.
