David Beavan -Lib Dem Candidate for Southwold and Reydon By-Election
Thursday 12th July 2018
Southwold & Reydon campaigner, David Beavan has been nominated as the Lib Dems candidate in the forthcoming Waveney District Council By-Election.
David, has been leading the high profile campaign to secure a fairer rating and taxation system for second homes and for more affordable housing for local people. He was the runner up to the Conservative in the contest for a County Council seat in May 2017 and is campaigning hard to win the seat in advance of the planned merger of the two Councils in 2019. He has already secured the formal support of the Green Party who have decided not to stand against David.
On Tuesday, the second homes tax loophole, which has already been featured on the front page of the East Anglian Daily Times was raised by Lib Dem Peer John Shipley in the House of Lords and gained the support of former Suffolk Coastal MP John Gummer, now Lord Deben.
David Beavan - at the heart of the local Community
David and his partner, Pamela, raised their family in Southwold. He has worked in organic farming, education, sailing instruction and as a freelance skipper. More recently, he restored the Leila, the fifth oldest yacht in the country at 126 years at Harbour Marine Services Southwold. He has raised £300k in lottery funds, taken local kids to sea as far as Finland for the last five years and chaired Southwold Rugby Club in the '90's when they started youth rugby and bringing all the sports clubs together for the new pavilion.
David has stood as a Parliamentary candidate twice and spent a life in politics on the centre ground.
He believes that "the best policies are not dictated by political dogma, but discovered through evaluation of evidence and the principle of fairness". David continued "I want to see the essence of Southwold and Reydon retained, which involves an active and caring community of residents, nurtured by tourism but not overwhelmed by it. We need both employment and environmental protection. We need education for young families and social care for the elderly".
David has already gained the support of the The Greens, who have agreed to support him in this election. "We have agreed not to oppose them in Beccles next year, where they have two very good councillors. Politicians should work together for the common good".
"Back in the day, I battled for Southwold in the front row on the rugby field. Now semi-retired I have the time to make a real nuisance of myself, campaigning on your behalf".
