Conference to choose: Debate "Opposing Brexit", or hold the planned consultation on Europe?

Although there are other Brexit- and EU-related items on the Liberal Democrats' Autumn Conference agenda, some of our local members were disappointed to see a consultation on Europe rather than a full debate on our party's position. A conference addendum has now been published, which will allow members attending the conference to vote on whether to proceed with the planned consultative session, or whether (instead) to hold a debate on "Opposing Brexit". You can find the addendum, including the text of the potential policy motion, on the party's website in the section for conference papers.

The nub of the new policy motion, should it reach debate, is that "Conference calls for:

• "The Government to seek to reverse the triggering of Article 50 of the Lisbon treaty at the earliest opportunity and for the UK to retain its current status as a member of the European Union.
• "The Liberal Democrats to continue to campaign for Britain to remain a member of the European Union.
• "The Liberal Democrats to commit to seeking to reverse the triggering of Article 50 in the event of a Liberal Democrat-led Government being formed prior to the UK leaving the European Union and to construe their election as a democratic mandate for doing so."
