Carlford by-election: Jon Neal standing as Liberal Democrat candidate

26 Jun 2016

Jon Neal has been selected to run as the Liberal Democrat candidate in the Carlford by-election to be held on Thursday 7th July.

Jon is a Director at Suffolk Mind. He went to Kesgrave High School until leaving for university in the nineties, graduating from Hull University. He later returned to the area and now lives in Kesgrave, with his wife and two children. Jon has served as a councillor for the East Riding of Yorkshire Unitary Authority, and stood as the Liberal Democrats' parliamentary candidate for Central Ipswich and North Suffolk in May 2015.

He writes:

I am delighted to have been chosen to contest the Suffolk County seat of Carlford in the forthcoming By-Election, following the death of Cllr Peter Bellfield whom I know was a well respected representative.

Sustainable rural communities are vital to not only the UK economy, environment and ecology but to our way of life. We have seen the demise of local post offices, shops and bus services. The high cost of housing and lack of affordable housing is forcing young people back home to live with their parents. Rural villages are often the last to receive advances in technology and road repairs, and voices against inappropriate development are often ignored. Remaining village schools are under a clear threat as the Government pushes on with its schools academisation programme, and health and social care budgets are under constant pressure with serious implications for future services.

If we are to ensure that our villages remain sustainable, we must work in partnership with our neighbours, present a clear case for a fair share of resources and (critically) be properly consulted when significant changes are proposed. Liberal Democrats have a reputation for fighting on behalf of local people, and for getting things done.

My local background and my experience in local government, health and social care, and in agriculture and countryside issues will enable me to fully represent you at Suffolk County Council, given your support on 7th July.
