Aidan Van de Weyer adopted as candidate for Lib Dems in Central Suffolk & North Ipswich

Liberal Democrat members and supporters met at Henley on Tuesday evening to adopt Aidan Van de Weyer as Central Suffolk & North Ipswich Coastal parliamentary candidate for the General Election on 8th June.

Aidan is a leading campaigner on rural transport issues, especially bus services and active modes such as cycling. He helped retain the main regular bus route for his villages and has been instrumental in successfully building up a network of rural cycle routes. He has worked on putting in place protections for some of the most important green spaces in Cambridgeshire, including an historic nature reserve and one of the largest village greens in the country. Alongside an active role in local politics, he works as a business and IT consultant for small companies.

Aidan said: "I am delighted to be taking the Lib Dem message to Central Suffolk & North Ipswich voters. Many people are deeply concerned about the direction the Conservatives are taking our country. Most of the Suffolk Conservative MPs supported remaining in the EU but have quickly fallen into line and are now supporting a hard Brexit."

"This election must also be about the crisis in our health and social care services, with one million elderly people not receiving the care they need.

"Our children deserve the best start in life. Unfortunately, because of Conservative cuts, schools up and down the country are taking drastic measures. Staff cuts are now commonplace and more than half of school buildings are in urgent need of repair. This is a disgrace - and our children deserve better. The Liberal Democrats will invest £7bn more in our schools and colleges over the next Parliament.

"The Liberal Democrats offer a opportunity for a change in direction, and a positive future for our young people in an open, tolerant and united Britain. The Lib Dems are the only alternative to the hard Brexit course of May and Corbyn."
