EU flag

"United in diversity"

The motto of the European Union is "United in diversity", which could be as appropriate a motto for the Liberal Democrats themselves as it is for the EU. We are a truly democratic party, encompassing members with wide-ranging beliefs. But the Liberal Democrats are the only mainstream party who resoundingly support the UK's continued membership of the EU. Why do we believe that the EU is good for the UK?*

  • 10% of UK jobs depend on our membership of the EU - that's more than three million jobs.
  • Our membership of the EU gives us access to the EU single market. Leaving the EU would introduce barriers to trade, as well as deterring overseas investors and employers. 45% of our exports go to the EU market.
  • As a member of the EU, we have a say in EU legislation and decision-making. EU decisions affect us whether we are in or out of the club, so it makes sense to take a role in creating the rules.
  • It's not all about business, with free movement of capital, goods and services. The EU gives us freedom of movement as individuals. Two and a half million UK nationals live elsewhere in the EU, outside the UK, and the EU gives them the right to work, study and access state support systems in the EU country where they live.
  • The EU defends and promotes our rights as consumers, and our rights to justice and equality.
  • The EU has brought peace and democracy across Europe, and even won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2012.
  • The EU's cross-border policing helps us to combat international crime and terrorism, making us safer.
