East Suffolk Liberal Democrats congratulate Ed Davey on his election as Party Leader
Ed Davey has been elected as Leader of the Liberal Democrats. In an short announcement at 11.30am today Party President Mark Pack declared that Ed Davey had been elected with 42,756 votes to Layla Moran with 24,564. (57.6% of the party membership voted).
Ed praised Layla and said, my friend Layla Moran, ran a passionate campaign. Her energy has inspired many people and I look forward to her playing a big role in my team. He continued: 'The mission that unites all of us now, is to build our party back up and get rid of this cruel, incompetent and arrogant Tory government'.
Ed said "Imagine a country that is fairer, greener and more caring. That is the country I want to build as Leader of the Liberal Democrats.
A fairer country where we tackle social injustice. Where we give parents universal childcare to help them with one of the biggest financial challenges they face and everybody a universal basic income.
A greener country, where we invest £150bn into green jobs for our young people, green homes and a green energy network. As a trained economist and someone with a track record of delivering green jobs when I was in Government, I know I've got the experience to make sure that we make the recovery from Covid a green recovery.
A more caring country, where we give the 10 million carers in our country a new deal, with a high carers allowance and more legal protection. I was a young carer for my mum, so this one is personal. I know how tough it is for so many carers and they deserve so much better than what they get right now".
Layla Moran MP fought a lively and inspiring Leadership election campaign and will clearly play a significant role in rebuilding the Party after a bruising General Election
