An Eton mess of a Government silences Parliament - when will we hear the people sing!

August 30, 2019 8:15 PM

A Prime Minister elected by 0.25% of the 66m British people, with no majority or mandate, resorts to 'Bullingdon Club tactics' to close down Parliament in order to trash the Country. Boris Johnson

Silencing Parliament - Will we hear the People sing?

'The Weimar Republic was a failed democracy, but ... democracies fail in different ways. We can't expect a direct re-run. But there are echoes, even if they are not yet audible to most voters. By the time we hear them, we may no longer be in a position to do anything about it'.

Peter Oborne - Open Democracy April 19

A thread in which all the top members of this government tell the truth: that proroguing parliament would be profoundly anti-democratic. They apparently think the electorate is stupid..

@BorisJohnson, PM 'I would like to make it absolutely clear that I am not attracted to arcane procedures such as the prorogation of Parliament. As someone who aspires to be the PM of a democratic nation, I believe in finding consensus in the House of Commons'

@GeorgeFreemanMP, transport minister: 'The idea that a new PM will want, let alone be allowed by backbench MPs or Peers, to prorogue Parliament is bonkers. It would look appalling.'

@andrealeadsom also said: 'It's certainly not something I would seek to do. I'm passionate about parliament democracy.

@NickyMorgan01 again: 'Proroguing Parliament is clearly a mad suggestion. You cannot say you are going to take back control … and then go: 'Oh, by the way, we are just going to shut Parliament down for a couple of months, so we are just going to drift out on a no deal'

@michaelgove, Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster: 'I think it will be wrong for many reasons. I think it would not be true to the best traditions of British democracy'

and from the west Suffolk Tory MP who wanted the job so much:

@MattHancock 'A policy on Brexit to prorogue Parliament would mean the end of the Conservative Party as a serious party of government'

@MattHancock again: Proroguing Parliament undermines parliamentary democracy. I rule it out and call on all candidates to do the same

Sajid Javid, Chancellor: 'You don't deliver on democracy by trashing democracy . . . we are not selecting a dictator of our country"

@AmberRuddHR Work & Pensions sec: 'The idea of leaving the EU to take back more control into parliament and to consider the idea of closing parliament to do that is the most extraordinary idea I've ever heard. It is a ridiculous suggestion to consider Proroguing parliament

@MattHancock, Health sec: 'There is this idea from some people that to deliver Brexit we should suspend our parliamentary democracy, we should prorogue parliament. That goes against everything those men who waded onto those beaches fought & died for - and I will not have it.

If we had any doubt that 'Trumpism' had finally crossed the Atlantic and landed on our shores along with its tool kit for cheats, liars and dissemblers we now have confirmation with the latest Things to Do list ( see below) from the person who treated Parliament with total contempt; the so called 'DC Brain' living in a cupboard in the Cabinet Room at No 10 Downing Street. Having already sent a three person Mogg hit squad to a Privy Council and placed HM Queen in an invidious position, this PM now plans to withhold any Brexit delaying Bill from receiving the Royal Assent. As we have seen already any denials are deemed totally worthless...

So when will we hear the People sing?
