SCHOOL LEAVING AGE RAISED

RESTAURANTS MUST CLOSE AT 10 PM

March 13th

In the second reading of the Education Bill, MPs voted to raise the school leaving age for all children to 14 years.

The Fisher Act; which raised the age previously set in 1899, to 14 paved the way for increased tertiary education and would remain in place for a further 26 years when the 1944 Education Act increased it to 15 years.

March 20th

The Government has announced that coal, gas and electricity are to be rationed across the country.

Coal rationing which had been in place in London since October 1917 was extended nationwide and local coal controllers and fuel and lighting committees assured that permitted quantities of fuel were allocated to each house on the basis of the number of rooms.

In addition the Government required that theatres must close by 10.30pm and restaurants shut by 10pm.
